Sealant Solutions for Sandstone

Protecting and preserving the beauty of sandstone requires the right pre-sealing and sealing solutions. Whether you’re installing new sandstone surfaces or maintaining existing ones, choosing the appropriate products can make a significant difference in longevity and appearance.

Sandstone Pre-Sealants

Pre-sealing sandstone before installation can be very helpful for keeping the stone stain-free. This can be especially handy if you are concerned about stain marks while the building project is ongoing. It is important to note that not all sandstone finishes require pre-sealing.

PCA Pre-Seal™ is the best product to use on untreated or unglazed surfaces. This sealant will make the stone less absorbent but will still allow the sandstone to breathe. The pre-sealant is completely clear and shine-free so it won’t affect the aesthetics or appearance of the natural stone in any way. It is a practical pre-sealant for all stone types including quartz sandstone or blue sandstone.

Pre-Grout Sandstone Sealants

It is always best to seal sandstone before applying grout. Sealants will keep the stone from absorbing moisture from grout work and will keep your stones from becoming stained around the edges.

If the sandstone tiles or cladding are completely unsealed then it can be good to apply a coating of PCA Pre-Seal™.

The stone that is already pre-sealed can be coated with PCA SurfaceShield® Pro Natural Look. This solvent-based sealer is excellent for tiled and paved surfaces and will keep the stone surface from becoming stained by grout.

PCA PaveShield™ Pro Water-Based Natural Look Penetrating Sealer is a good alternative to solvent-based sealers and can be a better selection for outdoor surfaces because it provides good UV resistance, and mould resistance, but preserves the natural appearance of the stone.

SandStone Sealers

It is recommended to seal outdoor sandstone surfaces every 1 – 2 years and your indoor sandstone surfaces or floors should be sealed every 2 – 3 years.

PCA SurfaceShield® Pro Natural look penetrating sealer is a good option if you want to maintain that all-natural appearance for your stone surfaces. This sealant won’t alter the colour and won’t make the stone appear glossy, yet will protect it from natural elements without altering the slip resistance.

PCA SurfaceShield® Pro Wet Look Sealer can be a good selection if you want to enhance the vibrancy of your exterior and interior stonework. This sealer will also provide good protection from the elements and also doubles as a grout sealer.

PCA SurfaceSeal™ can be a good option for outdoor driveways but will provide a high-gloss finish for your surfaces. The product’s water and oil resistance makes it ideal for protecting sandstone in driveways since it will protect these surfaces from oil stains. Because of the sealant’s glossy appearance, many also like to use the product indoors in high-traffic areas. The lustre of the sealant will enhance the floor’s vibrancy, offering a protected non-slip surface when mixing anti slip additive with the sealer.

PCA Consolidate & Seal™ is a good option for sandstone flooring around swimming pools or for outdoor spaces in coastal regions where there is high salt content in the air. This sealant will harden the porous surface, bind the particles together, and protect against chemicals or salts.
